Recognition and understanding of nonverbal communication signals, conveyed by others, is key to improving interactions and relationships. It’s the basis of empathy because compassion and understanding have to start from recognising an emotion. Once you understand nonverbal cues and learn to recognise them, you have evidence of emotion, solidifying what would otherwise be, at best, a gut feeling. 

You'll learn the meaning behind innate nonverbal behaviours and gain insight into behaviours that indicate dislike, discomfort and distress, and expressions that reveal true emotions. Helping you to understand others, identify vulnerable or at-risk individuals and better support the people that you lead or interact with–ultimately developing your emotional intelligence. 

But it’s a lot more than that, we’ll dig deeper and you'll learn the nonverbal cues that point towards deception. Research shows that 91% of people lie regularly and while most of these lies are trivial–a concealment of an emotion, or a pro-social lie–some are significant and potentially damaging to relationships, communities and organisations. Research also shows that the majority of people are only 54% accurate in detecting a lie, however you can increase your accuracy to over 90% with training and practice. 

You’ll learn to recognise the nonverbal cues that show misalignment between words and actions and explore gestures that are the most reliable and telling, those that say one thing when words say another and those that convey a specific meaning, such as, "I got away with that".
