Distractions and Hyper-Focus

I enjoyed chatting to Divan and Mark from Candour Communication Podcast recently. So much so that I lost all knowledge of what was taking place around me.

I can be easily distracted which has been a struggle at times when working in an open-plan office. Yet I can also easily fall into a state of hyper-focus, where distractions around me become invisible.

This can be misinterpreted as being in a bad mood, as it can seem I’m not participating in office banter and the likes. It’s not that, I’m just fully present in my moment–whatever that is at the time.

Nerding-out and Flow State

It usually happens when I’m nerding-out over something interesting, being creative or when I get into a flow state in my work. After relaxing into my conversation with Divan and Mark, I reached this state of hyper-focus, zoning out from my surroundings–my front room office and all that was taking place at home.

Having spoken to Divan previously, I knew that our upcoming chat would be enjoyable. We had a good rapport and laughed a fair bit–I felt very comfortable opening up to him. And based on what I knew about Mark, I knew it would be an easy and enjoyable conversation.

As we recorded this podcast, unbeknownst to me, a scheduled plumber approached and entered our front door, walked past me (with my husband), assessed our leaky shower, then left the house–again walking past me. I was stunned when I asked Lee what time the plumber was arriving and he told me he had been! Granted, Lee had asked him to be quiet, so as not to distract me, since he knows how easily distracted I can be, but still! 🤷🏻‍♀️
