NW Magazine: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Body Language Analysis
NW Magazine recently asked me to analyse a couple of images of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The irony here is that I generally have no clue what’s happening in the celebrity world. In my spare time, I’m either nerding out over research articles, gardening, being creative or cooking. I know, I sound ultra boring, but I love it!

Word on the street is that Kim’s recently admitted that Kanye has been controlling, in regards to how she dresses–telling her to tone down her sexy image.
Is that reflected in recent images of Kim and Kanye? Let’s have a look at my analysis for NW Magazine.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Body Language Analysis
Here’s what I told NW Magazine…
There are many reasons why Kanye would be leaning in so closely like this, but let's face it, it doesn't feel positive. There's no warmth, loving or happiness expressed in the images captured. Instead, Kanye holds Kim with tension.
His fingers are held together in twos, with a slight gap between them (this part of this image is cut off in NW Magazine). If you try to do this, you can feel it's tense. It's as though he's putting pressure on–a deliberate signal that's only for her.
In one photo, Kim's eyes are closed (this image wasn’t used). While she could be caught in a blink, it looks like an eye blocking behaviour. When young children are faced with something they dislike, often they cover their eyes with their hands. This is an innate behaviour that even congenitally blind children display (children who are born blind). As children grow up they learn to conceal their emotions, modifying behaviours to fit in with social norms. So by the time we are adults, the behaviour has adapted and it looks like a long blink, a more discrete behaviour, less likely to give away our true emotion. Whatever Kanye is signalling, Kim doesn't like it.
The lean-in is a little unsettling too. While the lower half of Kanye's face looks emotionally flat and expressionless, the upper half, his upper lids and eyebrows are engaged–he looks like he's about to whisper something to her and he’s drawing attention to it. If only we knew what it was.
I can't avoid mentioning Kanye's left hand is in his pocket. While a lot of men do this as a habit, there's no getting away from the fact that our hands often withdraw, out of sight, when we have something to hide or when we feel discomfort.
Analysing Body Language and Expression from Photographs
While it’s easy to analyse body language and expression from an image, we need to keep in mind that an image is only a moment captured in time. So while these emotions are true to that moment, they don’t necessarily reflect the state of the relationship. For that, I’d need to be a fly on the wall, but I’m quite happy as I am thanks 😜.
